All About Goblins
![]() from Wikipedia Commons
Legendary creatures 'Kobold','illustator': 'JNL' In some cultures a goblin is a rather annoying little bugger similar to what is known as a Brownie. There are various names for these strange little creatures, Kolbolds, Hobgobs, Gobelins, Boggarts, etc. These terms sometimes are applied to the homeliest of the inhabitants of Fae, or Faerie, or to the “sub-races” of Faerie known variously as Wichtlein, the Irish Phooka, the Scottish Trow, Welsh and Cornish Knockers, and the rather infamous Puck of Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream” amongst many others. Despite that goblins are often portrayed as a villain in many tales about the world of Faerie; goblins are not truly evil creatures, but they are pranksters. Having no real 'moral' code of their own, if they decide to make habitation with a human host, then they will adopt the moral code of the human in question. Slothful and/or greedy people often feel themselves being pinched by unseen hands and find their house turned upside down and nearly everything they own thrown about the home. They like to bang pots and pans at the most inconvenient hours of the night, go knocking on the doors and walls, or sometimes they even like to go digging up graves and throwing the bones all over the ground. Most of the tales of the goblin come from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man and Germany. The basic lore and legends of the British Isles are that the English Hobgoblin adores living in human dwellings where he'll make quite a bit of trouble for the people who live there—often driving them out. Still others prefer to live in mines where they are always on the lookout for treasure and/or trouble. And, a few others of the clan like nice little grottos, and they will usually live in the same one for their whole life.
